Common Dental Problems and How to Prevent Them

Dental problems are the most familiar health issue a person faces in his lifetime. All of us have at one or another time in our life faced dental pain, and dental sensitivity and have been perplexed as to how to avoid conditions that may lead to such severe pain. Dental problems have increased due to the high amount of refined sugars in our diet which may in turn lead to tooth decay, pain, and swelling in teeth.

Common Dental Problems

Tooth pain :

Tooth pain is one of the commonest problems anybody faces. It could be because of tooth decay, problems in gums, the eruption of the third molar or last molar, etc. The best way to avoid tooth pain is to brush twice daily with a fluoridated toothpaste antibacterial/antiseptic mouthwash like chlorhexidine mouthwash. If you don’t have a chlorhexidine mouthwash, you can use a warm saline gargle (ie table salt in lukewarm water). A warm saline gargle helps in eliminating bacteria from the mouth.

Bleeding gums:

Bleeding gums with or without bad breath is one of the commonest problems. It is said to be present in 70% of the world’s population. Bleeding gums occurs because of the deposition of tartar between tooth and gums due to faulty brushing technique. Bleeding gums could be reduced by brushing twice daily, consuming food rich in Vitamin C such as lemons, oranges, and Indian gooseberry, and using an antiseptic chlorhexidine mouthwash.

Mouth ulcer:

Mouth ulcers are frequently faced by many people. They are painful and annoying. Most mouth ulcers are seen in people who are highly stressed out.  Mouth ulcers can be avoided by having a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, drinking a lot of water, having adequate sleep, and keeping oneself stress-free. Consumption of tobacco can also be a cause of mouth ulcers. Mouth ulcers caused due to tobacco consumption should not be taken lightly and should be examined by a dentist immediately especially if it is not healing. Most ulcers are self-limiting and tend to heal in 5-7 days after a course of multivitamins and the application of mouth ulcer gels multiple times a day.

Sensitivity in teeth:-

The sensitivity of teeth is a common problem that is faced by many people, especially the elderly. The sensitivity of teeth is caused by exposure to the root surface of the tooth and loss of enamel from the surface of the teeth. This problem can be avoided by using a soft toothbrush and a gentle brushing technique so that there is minimal wear of tooth enamel due to brushing, also we should avoid using abrasive toothpaste that can cause wear of tooth enamel resulting in sensitivity.

There are simple things that one can do to avoid dental problems such as

  1. Brushing teeth twice daily.
  2. Using a medicated or antibacterial mouthwash once or twice daily.
  3. Rinsing one’s mouth after each meal.
  4. Avoiding carbonated drinks and sweet treats.
  5. Get your teeth checked and professionally cleaned once every six months.
  6. Quit smoking or using tobacco.
